The Meaning of Love

This was a poem I wrote in 1992 (this was before the internet had websites) and I sent this around to friends at other schools.  I received a lot a replies from it and some reports of it being posted on doors in dorms.  I am glad that it was a blessing to others, it was something that I felt needed to be said.  At the time I wrote it, there were so many people I knew who were chasing after “love” in a person only to be let down.  Well here it is:

The Meaning of Love

I love you.

Heard that before?
Have you ever loved?
Do you feel the word is misused?

Let me tell you what real love is…

Love suffers long and is kind.
Love is not vain nor puffed up.
Love doesn’t behave poorly,
seek it’s own self interests,
and is not easily provoked.

Love thinks no evil.
Love doesn’t enjoy trouble,
but does enjoy truth.

Love bears all things,
believes all things,
hopes all things, and
endures all things.

Love never fails.

Now that you know what love really
is… Have you ever loved anyone?
Has anyone ever loved you?

The greatest demonstration of love is
the willingness to die for someone else.

I love you.

Now does it sound any different?         29 Nov 92

—-

May the Lord show us true love in our relationships.
Let us seek His love and learn how to give His love
to others.

In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
